CHIP Provides Free Health Insurance for ChildrenUnderstanding the Federal Children’s Health Insurance Program
The Children's Health Insurance Program offers free health care and dental coverage to millions of children whose families could otherwise not afford it.
Although the debate over public health care for adults rages on, virtually every child in the United States is already eligible for free health insurance through federal and state funded programs such as the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). What is CHIP?The Children’s Health Insurance Program, also known as CHIP insurance, was established in 1997 to ensure that every child had access to health care coverage even if their parents or custodians could afford it. It was created to provide for children who were uninsured due to the fact that their parents made too much money to qualify for Medicaid, but not enough money to pay for health insurance. CHIP insurance is available in all 50 U.S. States plus the District of Columbia. However; each state usually has a different name for its programs and the programs are administered by state officials not the federal government. According to Insurekidsnow.gov, the program’s official website, CHIP served more than 7.3 million children in fiscal year 2008. In February of 2009, President Obama signed the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act (CHIPRA) which extends CHIP insurance coverage through the year 2013. What Does CHIP Insurance Cover? Each state can determine what its specific plan will cover, but federal guidelines mandate that every state must cover at least the following health care items:
Some states go beyond the federal mandates and offer health care coverage for additional items such as reproductive health care to teens. Who Is Eligible for CHIP Insurance?Although state eligibility requirements vary, there are several federal criteria that must be met in order to be eligible for the CHIP insurance program.
How to Apply for CHIP InsuranceApplications for CHIP Insurance must be made through the state that an individual resides in. Those who wish to apply for coverage, or want to learn more about eligibility requirements can go to Insurekidsnow.gov, or call 1-877-KIDS NOW (1-877-543-7669) to be directed to the official program office in their state.
