With millions of people providing creative designs, shoppers are bound to find something that meets their fancy. Love chocolate? Check out the “me + chocolate = happiness” T-shirt at Corrie Kuiper’s store at Cafe Press (women’s T-shirt: $18.99). Kustomized Kids sell a “My Daddy is a Rockstar” tees in infant and youth sizes for pint-sized fans of their father’s garage band ($18.99). Part of the fun shopping at this unique T-shirt retailer is voting on designs that artists submit to the site. Add your two cents by signing up at Threadless with your name, email address and birth date. Then rate T-shirt design submissions from 0 (worst) to 5 (best) and leave an appreciative or critical comment. Only four to six designs are chosen every week to be printed and sold on the site at around $15 for a men’s tee. Threadless designers pride themselves in clever, funny and original designs, such as Jaco Haasbroek’s “down with CAPITALISM” t-shirt (below). The kids’ version of this t-shirt sells for $17. “Type Tees” which bear the best-rated slogans submitted to the site, usually sell for a few dollars less. Shipping varies with UPS. Threadless also sells gift certificates and offers a T-shirt-a-month subscription ($200 annually).
Like Cafe Press, Zazzle prints T-shirts on demand and features a dizzying array of custom T-shirt designs to choose from. Unique to the Zazzle site is the ability to customize branded collections such as Disney, Star Wars and Barbie. Choose an image of Yoda wielding a light saber, for example, and select one from a few dozen phrases to personalize your tee. A pop up menu of common boys and girls names also gives you more opportunity to make a truly customized t-shirt. Sizes range from infant onesies to 6XL men’s. Prices: $10.95 to $36.95.
