Get funny, religious and animated Christmas e-cards and send your holiday greetings without spending a dime on postage.

Christmas e-mail cards may not serve the decorative purpose of traditional holiday greetings, but electronic Christmas cards save the frugal family money on postage and paper while still sharing the festive spirit of the season.

Some sites offer free Christmas e-cards and other sites offer more bells and whistles for a fee. Choose the option that fits your style and your budget.

Egreetings

This site contains hundreds of free email greeting cards for all occasions and dozens of options for Christmas e-cards, most of which are animated. If you think the friends and family on your Christmas card list would get a holiday giggle from a host of Santas dancing on a rooftop, this site is for you. The Egreetings site allows you to choose a holiday e-card, personalize it with an almost unlimited amount of text and send to every e-mail recipient in your address book. To maintain an address book on the site, you must sign up for free membership on Egreetings with your name, email, gender and birthday. Religious options on this site include an animated start twinkling over a manger scene and other e-cards with moving images and background music. The option to add a personal photo to your greeting creates a personal touch to your e-mail Christmas card.

Hipstercards.com

Need an edgier, more trendy card for the folks on your Christmas card list? Browse the selection at Hipstercards.com for funny, retro and topical free e-cards for the holiday season. Hipstercards even boasts a selection of “Christmukkah” e-cards that combine joyful sentiments from Jewish and Christian December holidays. The cards at this site also poke gentle fun at fruitcakes and office parties and include a huge collection of cute-kitten e-cards. You can only send each card to five recipients and must limit your message to 500 characters. Making up for these limitations are the site's clever selection of images and sentiments.

Conservation International

The nonprofit group Conservation International lives up to its name with a selection of e-cards on its Web site that support conservation of paper by the e-cards' virtual nature while also educating and promoting causes that promote living harmoniously with nature. Although the Conservation International e-cards contain no overtly Christmas or seasonal messages, the spirit of the earth-friendly e-cards matches the seasonal sentiments of peace on earth, good will to all. Choose from mountain gorillas, unique species, landscapes and cultural photos, add up to 10 e-mail addresses of recipients and a message. While you’re at Conservation International’s site, calculate your eco-footprint—the impact your lifestyle has on our planet.
