Parents and crafts enthusiasts can save money at Christmas by making homemade decorations. Preparing a home for the holiday season doesn't have to cost the earth.

The costs of Christmas can take a lot of fun out of what should be a fun and relaxing time. Those looking to save some cash might want to consider making their own homemade Christmas decorations rather than buying them in stores. This can be a lot of fun, especially if the kids get involved, and will make the holiday look and feel a little more personal.

Home Made Christmas Decoration Ideas

There really are no limits on what can be done here. Virtually any Christmas decorations can be modified to be made at home by both adults and kids. Some popular ideas include:

Streamers and chains: All that is needed to make these decorations is some paper/card and some glue. For example, a parent could sit down with their kids and cut out strips from crepe paper or shiny gift wrap and then loop and stick the strips together to make traditional chains.

Hanging decorations: Many people like to have a hanging centrepiece in their homes. Rather than buying expensive store mobiles or hanging displays, these can also be easily made at home. Pushing two coat hangers together so that they sit at right angles to each other making a kind of star shape will give a good base. Cover this in tinsel or paper to decorate the hangers and get the kids to colour in Christmas pictures or to cut out traditional shapes (i.e. trees, stars and snowflakes) from shiny paper. These can then be strung up on the coat hanger to create a mobile effect. As an alternative, take a simple paper plate, decorate it and punch a hole in the top so it can be hung up.

Tree decorations: There are many different homemade Christmas tree decoration ideas to choose from. Why not pick up a few pine/fir cones and paint them in silver and gold? As an alternative, these could be painted with glue and then rolled in glitter. Or, use free Christmas printables or stencils to find suitable designs and pictures. Print them out on to card and have the kids colour them. Punch a hole in the top and they'll be ready to hang on the tree. As an alternative, get some sheets of craft foam and have them draw designs on it. These can then be cut out and decorated. Bear in mind that homemade decorations may be best kept away from tree lights which can get hot.

How to Get Craft Supplies for Homemade Christmas Decorations

Many families with young kids may already have some or all of the stuff they need to get started. There may also be things lying around the house that could be used like paper plates, string, ribbon and shiny wrapping paper.

Those who need to start from scratch may need to buy some basic supplies. There are also people that do like to make their own decorations but prefer to do it from kits and stencils. In both cases looking at online craft stores may be a good place to get ideas and buy supplies at a discount.

Think About Making Homemade Christmas Cards and Party Invitations

There are also other ways to save money at Christmas. Many people will make their own cards, for example. They can do this from scratch or use free printable cards as an alternative. Those thinking about throwing a Christmas party can also use free party invite sites to save some money there. Finally, remember that making homemade Christmas gift wrap may be another good way of cutting costs.
