Save energy and money and let the sun charge your garden's lights, fountains, decorations, and stepping stones all day for a beautiful nighttime landscape.

Illuminate the pathways, decks, and steps around your home with environmentally friendly outdoor solar lights and other solar-powered garden decorations.

Solar power creates a virtually free way to light your landscape at night. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, outdoor solar lights use solar cells to convert sunlight to electricity, storing that electricity in batteries during the day for use at night. The department adds that outdoor solar lighting systems and solar-powered products will only perform well if they receive the manufacturer’s recommended amount of daily sunlight.

New products that harness the power of the sun to light the outdoors go beyond basic pathway lights. Following is a list of unique solar-powered lights and other landscaping accents available from online retailers.

Solar Stepping Stones

A pack of five sturdy lighted stepping stones from Smarthome illuminates a path to your door or through your garden with no impact on your electricity bill. With the look of carved stone (see photo below), these resin-coated steps are available in square, hexagonal, and round shapes. The square stones are 12.5 inches wide and light automatically at dusk after charging all day. The included LED bulb will normally last over 100,000 hours, according to the manufacturer. The battery is replaceable. Price for 5-pack: $69.99. Shipping varies with a heavy-item surcharge.

Solar Water Fountain

Enjoy the soothing sounds of a trickling waterfall while attracting birds with a solar copper water fountain from Silicon Solar Inc. The 29-inch-high by 22-inch-wide fountain (see picture below) features five tiers of copper basins, rocks, a pump, and a solar panel that can sit up to 15 feet away from the fountain. Available colors: grey, pewter, brass, or copper. Price: $99.95. Estimated average shipping charge is $12 per order.

Snail Garden Light

The kids will love the addition of a glowing snail to your garden, such as the one from SolarLightsPro.com. The luminous mollusk (pictured below) measures 9 inches long and 5 inches high and wide and comes with installed rechargeable AA batteries. The automatic light sensor turns the LED light on at night. Price: $9.90, shipping varies.

Solar Flamingo Statue

Artfully tacky, the solar powered fiber optic pink flamingo from Home Depot sports a bright pink glowing gazing ball atop a pink resin flamingo statue. Size: 38 inches high by 16 inches wide by 7 inches deep. Price: $126. Shipping varies.

Solar Address Sign

Be seen at night with the solar stainless steel address plaque from Yardiac. The address marker holds up to four numbers (which arrive as 4-inch waterproof stickers that the purchaser applies). The LED light in the wall mounted address marker turns on automatically at dusk and off at dawn. Measurements: 9 inches long by 3 inches wide, and 9 ½ inches high. Price: $39.95. Shipping: $7.95.

Keep in mind that solar powered lights will not work as well in areas that receive less sunlight and during the shorter days of winter.
