Making homemade wrapping paper & gift wrap for Christmas isn't just a way of saving money. This makes a gift look more personal and is a great way of keeping kids busy.

Using store-bought Christmas gift wrap may save time but it can eat into a budget. Those who want to save some cash and give their gifts a special touch could consider making their own Xmas wrapping paper at home. This is a fun activity for both adults and kids and just adds to the excitement and anticipation of the holiday.

Craft Supplies for Homemade Christmas Gift Wrap

Some people will save wrapping paper from previous years and simply reuse it when it comes to wrapping their gifts. For those who forgot to get that organised last year or who want to make their own personalised gift wrap then there are many different ways of doing this.

Some of the things that will be needed may well already be lying around at home, some may need to be purchased. To a certain extent this depends on the individual and how they want to design their own wrapping paper. In basic terms most people will stock up on:

  • Paper
  • Glue and/or sellotape
  • Paint and/or colouring pens/crayons
  • Stickers and/or stencils to help with the decoration

Paper is the supply that most people will need most of. There are various options to choose from when it comes to stocking up here. Small gifts, for example, could simply be wrapped in a sheet of decorated copier paper. Larger gifts could be wrapped in decorated brown paper. Other options often used here include:

  • Sugar paper
  • Butcher paper
  • Large envelopes
  • Computer printout paper
  • Rolls of cheap lining wallpaper
  • Tissue paper
  • Crepe paper
  • Rolls of plain coloured wrapping paper

So, for example, a parent could give their kids a roll of lining paper and get them to stencil Christmas decorations on it. Or, a simple large manila envelope could be decorated and, when the top sealed area is cut off, it could be converted into a gift bag by punching some holes at the top and threading some ribbon or wool through them to make handles.

How to Decorate Homemade Christmas Wrapping Paper

There are many different ways of decorating gift wrap here. Those looking for a professional look could stencil on Christmas designs. Those looking to get the kids involved could simply give them a roll of seasonal stickers or some felt tips or crayons and let them loose on the paper! Using site that offer free Christmas printables might be useful here as well. Kids could then colour in the pictures when they are printed off and cut them out to be stuck on to the paper.

Buying Christmas stencils online can be cheap but those who prefer to make their own stencils can do so easily enough at home. They can, for example, cut stencils out of card, make them from craft sponges or even cut them into potatoes! The point here is to make a sheet of gift wrap look more personal than store wrap and to save some money into the bargain.

Bear in mind that making homemade wrapping paper is not the only way to do Christmas on a budget. It is, for example, easy to find free printable cards and even seasonal party invites online nowadays. Plus, once the kids get tired of making gift wrap, get them started on making their own homemade Christmas decorations!
