As job layoffs continue, more people than ever are turning to home-based employment. Work at home parents show kids proper work ethics and what it takes to pay the bills.

Children learn from the examples set by adults. As more and more parents opt to work at home, kids are getting a first-hand look at how organization, dedication, and prompt attention to detail bring in the money.

Clearly Defined Work Habits

The manner in which a parent approaches a job, tackles the work, and completes the task is just as important as the job itself. The parent who is habitually disorganized on the job generates stress in the entire household. Children pick up the smallest details, especially anxiety and frustration.

Parents who work at home have to follow the same basic rules as the person leaving the house each day to go to work. The fact that there is no boss to keep everyone working makes no difference. The at-home worker is his own boss and must still follow certain work guidelines.

  • Be on time. So what if the "office" is the kitchen, or is a desk in the next room. It might even be the greenhouse outside. Whatever the home workplace, a scheduled time for work sets the foundation for a disciplined routine.
  • Keep an orderly work area. Young children especially, love to copy adult ways; so even if the job is baking cakes or sewing clothes, keep the workroom orderly. What the child observes now may very well set the stage for the future.
  • Approach work with a positive attitude. Hard times have upset lifestyles in many households, and this in turn makes children anxious. The child who sees his parent's passion for doing a job, trying to make life right again, has every reason to feel confident about the future.
  • Invite children to help. Helping eases frustration and allows one to regain some control over an otherwise dismal situation. Children feel a sense of pride when allowed to do their share of work, even if it's emptying a garbage can or sweeping the floor. Teens can help too, making deliveries, mailing items, and so forth.

A Steady Work Routine Keeps the Household Running Smoothly

The parent who practices a strong and consistent work routine is demonstrating good work ethics. Children can put these practices into play while still in school. With any luck, the habits will carry over into the workplace later on. Just as an office staff, a professional catering business, or a working ranch has a business plan, so must the work-at-home parent. A disciplined routine shows a child of any age – even a teenager – that good work habits really do pay off. The pay may not be as good as it was prior to the recession, but making an effort and doing something is better than doing nothing at all.

Parents working at home set examples that children can use now in school, and in the future as employed adults. Attention to details such as a maintaining a steady work routine, showing a positive attitude toward getting a job done, and keeping an organized work area, all reflect on the parent. By imitating and following what they observe, children learn the importance of strong work ethics. Working at home takes discipline and perseverance to succeed. When children see the outcome of hard work, they gain understanding and appreciation for the effort involved.
